Sex during pregnancy

When you are expecting you often change your view on sex. Sure, sex is the reason you are pregnant in the first place, but when you get pregnant you often change perspective on sex.

Quite a few are worried to damage the child if they have intercourse, or are afraid to provoke a premature birth. If your pregnancy is trouble free and everything is as it should be, there is no risk at all. You do not need to worry and can continue to have sex as you use to.

How does orgasm influence the Uterus and the Cervix?

Your uterus contracts during orgasm, but these contractions are not very strong and they are totally harmless. They are also not a sign of the birth has started. You might feel the child kicking, when it feels the movements from your intercourse. This is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.

You might experience a minor spotting after intercourse. This is because the cervix is more vascular - in other words, it becomes rich with blood vessels. This is nothing to worry about, however if the spotting continues after a couple of hours or increases in amount, let your doctor or midwife know. And if you’ve been having some bleeding during your pregnancy, avoid intercourse until your doctor can determine the cause.

Enjoy sex during pregnancy - please ;-)

One absolute great thing about having sex during pregnancy is that you do not have to worry about contraception. Many women experiences a increase in their libido, and they get easier and more often aroused. They enter a new, more conscious and receptive phase, that will continue until the child is born. This is caused by the higher concentrations of the female and pregnancy hormones during pregnancy. Some women experience stronger orgasms and some even their first orgasm ever.

On the other hand you might not feel especially sexual and your libido might be declining. Or you may find that your libido is more erratic than before, due to intense emotions and physical changes during your pregnancy. The physical discomfort during the last couple of weeks before birth might cause a decline in your libido and passion altogether - finding a comfortable position can become quite difficult.
What does your partner feel?

Your pregnancy will also change sex for your partner. Some men are afraid to hurt the baby during intercourse, but your babyis protected by the amniotic fluid in the womb and by your abdomen. No injury will occur during gentle, loving sex.
Some men might feel as if there is a “third person” in bed, that your baby is present and watching you having sex.
Other view you as a mother figure and not a sexual object to desire. Most men however, see their partner as even more beautiful and desirable than ever.

When it comes to sex during pregnancy, it is important to remember that there is no normal pattern.
Honesty is (again) the most important thing here. If you do not feel in the mood for sex, you can enjoy intimacy in lots of other ways. A relaxing massage, watching a favorite movie in each others arms or having a relaxing bath together.
And if you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact your midwife or seek advice in the forum.
